Electro Vaudeville Festival – April 12-13, 2013 – Grandview Legion 179

Last year, Val (the organizer) kindly invited me to the first Electro Vaudeville Festival and for me this was quite the concept in partying.  Firstly it was about the music, a swing sound fused with a more modern techno beat.  And second, it wasn’t only a dance party, it was a show with performers, live music, a movie, vendors and a photo shoot.  It had burlesque dancers, it had aerial silk dancers, fire breathers, swing lessons.  Simply, it was a blast.

Well, it seems like a year has passed and through out the year Val’s held other similar fantastic Electro Swing Club Vancouver parties and events throughout the city.    But now it’s time to bring back the full on Electro Vaudeville Festival!

The Festival format seems to have been extended this year as it’s going to be spread out over three sessions with unique entertainment for each one.   Whatever session you get you and your friends to, make sure you dress up and be ready for a swinging good time.  Or even better plan to go to all three!

If you’re not quite sure what to expect, you can check out his FREE Pre-Festival party at the Backstage Lounge on Friday night, where you’ll get a sampling of the type of talent that’s going to be available at the Fest.

Welcome to the Electro Vaudeville Fest!

A place where classy lasses and scruffy scoundrels alike come to enjoy a hoppin’, swingin’ good time on their feet.

Come jive to the vintage tunes and fresh modern beats of electro swing, jazz and blues performed by bands from across Europe and North America and let your heart lead you on a journey through time. But beware: you are certain to meet some exciting folks along the way! Burlesque and boylesque performers tantalize on-lookers. Gentlemen, take off your hats for the jaw dropping performances of acrobats. Give a holler for the cabaret performers, and a nod waaay up to the stilt-walkers.

Electro Swing is a new dance music sensation that has been quickly gaining momentum at a select few events this year. Old-school swing and jazz songs are revamped and revisited, wrapped up in sick modern beats and sultry bass lines. Past meets future in an exciting and unique way that’s sure to get your feet moving.
Our event welcomes one and all, ordinary and extraordinary. Only here can you meet a Victorian dandy, a 50′s style swing dancer and a dreaded belly dancer dancing together to the sweet rhythms of electro.

Dress up in your favorite Retro/Swing/Circus/SteamPunk/Victorian era influenced attire!

Looking for something a little different for Christmas?  Of course you are, or you wouldn’t be reading this.  So how about mixing some children’s literature with some fine dining by the folks at Swallow Tail Supper Club?  What if it was a pop-up restaurant with a location to be announced closer to the date?  Good

My 2012 Picks for Halloween in Vancouver

Halloween is such a fun time of year and there’s so many good shows and events to attend.  I am being a bummer and choosing not to dress up this year.   More for lack of a good costume than anything else.  So what is my criteria?  I am more about the theatrical story driven and/or experiential.  I’m not about the Fright Night “jump out and scare you” scene, although I have included one of those on my list.

This is not meant to be a comprehensive Halloween list, I’m going to pick the best ones that I am/have or would go to.  Excuse, it’s a little late, one event has passed (AbraCadaver Cabaret, mark it down for next year, awesome, awesome, awesome) and a few are close to selling out.  Hopefully, I’ll have more detailed listings or reviews for many of them at a later point.

In no particular order…. zombie roll…..

House of Forsaken Gods – TBA -  In the House Festival and Chris Murdoch
The Zombie Syndrome – TBA- The Virtual Stage
Debts (2012) – Roedde House Museum – ItsaZoo and Gord Mack.
Abra-cadaver Cabaret - Wise Hall – a little Voodoo Pixie and Dusty Flower Cabaret
Secret Souls Walk - TBA – Public Dreams
Waldorf Hotel – two years in a row, best Halloween party in town, sure to be three years.
Judge Dee and the Chinese Garden Murders – Sun Yat Sen Gardens – Seven Tyrants Theatre
A Tomb with a View – Studio 1398 – Upintheair & Genus Theatre
Dracula the Musical? – Chapel Arts – Awkward Stage Productions
Play with Monsters – Performance Works Granville Island – Solo Collective
Little Shop of Horrors – Jericho Arts Centre – Fighting Chance Productions
Zombie High School - East 16th Vancouver – Scared Stiff Productions

TBA means that they know where it is, but they’re keeping the location secret until closer till the date or until you purchase tickets.

And if you really insist on staying home, then watch American Horror Story Season 1 but do yourself a favour and skip Episode 12 (or just watch the last five minutes)

Debts (2012) – ItsaZoo – Roedde House Museum – Oct 17th to Nov 3rd

Last year, I caught one of the first performances of Mack Gordon’s Debts at the Roedde House Museum in the West End.  And what a trippy experience it was.  It’s hard to believe that this story isn’t actually connected with the venue.  So I was happy to hear that they were remounting it again this year for more people to catch this show.   Make sure that you’re one of them.

I recently watched American Horror Story (season 1) and there were a lot of similarities between that show and this one.  (although I can’t recall whether there was a hot french maid in Debts)  American Horror Story began it’s run only after Debts (2011) ended.

DEBTS

ITSAZOO productions is pleased to present DEBTS, a unique blend of live theatre, haunted house, and radio play at the historic Roedde House Museum in Vancouver’s West End. Inspired by the classic works of Edgar Allen Poe, and set in the style of 80’s slasher flicks, the audience will join five teenagers as they crash a wedding from hell and discover that some DEBTS can only be paid with their lives. DEBTS runs October 17th – Nov 3rd, 2012.

Written and directed by Jessie-nominated Mack Gordon, DEBTS features performances from James Avramenko, Bryan Nothling, Jayme Burke, Keira Danniels, Dan Johnston, Mike Klemak, Brett Harris, Laureen Smith and Kaitlin Williams.

Built in 1863, the Roedde House Museum acts as perfect backdrop and haunting setting for this unique play. This genuine heritage home gives the opportunity for authentic experiences that an audience would never be able to have in a theatre. DEBTS creates a narrative through line for Poe’s tales, philosophies and moods, including The Fall of the House of Usher, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Premature Burial and other classic tales.

DEBTStakes the audience out of the theatre to give them a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.  The audience goes on this journey together, fostering sympathy and community in a way that has never been attempted before. In DEBTS, we meet five familiar types:  the rebel, the slut, the girl next door, the nerd, and the everyman. They find themselves unexpectedly in the depths of a twisted and dark family wedding. They are pulled into the story of this dark family and must struggle to decide what’s real and what isn’t.   Who will survive to see tomorrow?

Jessie-nominated and named the Westender’s Favorite New Company in 2008, ITSAZOO has produced eight full-length works including six Canadian premieres since 2004. The company has developed a reputation for productions that feature provocative writing, and display the talent of emerging Canadian playwrights.

7th Annual Vancouver International Burlesque Festival – May 3rd to 5th, 2012

I came across the Vancouver burlesque scene back in late May 2012.  To my disappointment, I found out that Vancouver hosts an International Burlesque Festival which occurs in early May. I’d have to wait another 11 months and two weeks to see this showcase of talent once again. Fortunately, with the vibrant scene Vancouver has, there is plenty of burlesque performances to see throughout the year.

So last year, I dipped my toe in the water and booked for Performer Showcase at the Vogue Theatre, as I had conflicting events on the Thursday and Friday.  And wow… did I ever have a good time, kicking myself for not clearing my schedule to go the previous two nights.  Madame May I’s extremely moving and personal number.   April O’Peel revisited her hilariously raunchy mime act. Judith Stein’s, the most senior performer, held the audience’s attention like no other performer that graced the stage that night.  Scotty the Blue Bunny made many new fans that night.  I could go on, but let’s just say each year, the acts are going to up the ante.

I’ve been wanting to see Blue Morris’ Dirty Dancing Burlesque but I’ll be happy to start off with his Beatles Burlesque first.    Been a fan of NickyNineDoors voice (The Wild Party), but have yet to see Pandora and the Locksmiths perform.  And what can I say about the tribal fusion bellydance group, Luciterra but wow, your ticket value is almost complete right there.  I’m also looking forward to getting to know new acts and performers that I haven’t seen before.

So make sure you book your tickets for at least one of the nights, if not all three!  Thursday night Live Music Burlesque at the Rio Theatre, Friday and Saturday nights performer showcases at the Vogue Theatre.

Vancouver Lego Store Oakridge Mall – Grand Opening May 4-6, 2012

Hey did you know that there’s going to be Lego Store at the Oakridge Mall?  It’s going to be located by the kid’s play area right near the Safeway.

Note: The soft opening is scheduled to be tomorrow Friday, April 13th, 2012 (maybe not the best date if one is superstitious).   So what’s a soft opening?  It’s where the store and staff get to work out any issues and get everything up to speed for the official Grand Opening  May 4th to 6th, 2012.   Although it will most likely be busy for the soft opening, it won’t compare to the Grand Opening which usually has really long line ups just to get into the store.  But don’t let that dissuade you from being a part of it all.

So what happens at a Lego Brand Retail Store Grand Opening?  Traditionally a Lego Master Builder will come and build a huge Lego sculpture but that that’s still under wraps as to which model.  Kids will get to help build a part of it and get a Certificate of Achievement for helping.

The giveaways for the first three days are likely to be as follows.    However this information is not direct from Lego, so it may be incorrect or change.

Friday May 4th: Lego Minifigure T-shirt

Saturday May 5th: Lego Brand Store mini-model

Sunday May 6th: Vancouver Store Exclusive minifigs

Each will be available free with a $35 or more purchase.  Quantities will be limited and for that weekend only

For those of you adults out there that are still in love with the brick or have been reacquainted with this beloved childhood toy, did you know that there’s a Vancouver Lego Club? It’s a gathering of “kid at heart” minded people who build for fun and hopefully to inspire others with their creations. Check out their website at  www.vlc.ca  and look out for their upcoming Lego displays in the Lower Mainland.  Follow them on Twitter @VanLegoClub or Like them on FaceBook.

FourPlay (2012) afterthoughts – In the House Festival

FourPlay, a dinner and theatre show produced by Myriam Steinberg and her In the House Festival crew.  Like in real life, we don’t get to see all the stages of a couples relationship unfold, as was the case for my experience with this show.   I went to the second and the fourth show, the engagement and the wedding.  In retrospect, I wish I had seen the other two, as I’ve been to a lot of weddings but not nearly enough bachelor parties and good first dates!

So what was this all about?  It’s the four episode story of Sean and Heather, two schoolmates who meet again online and their courtship. We follow them through what they thought was a blind date, to their magical engagement, then their uproarious bachelor/bachelorette party and then to their eventual happily ever after wedding.  All of these encounters coincidentally happening at the same restaurant where they first reunite, the Salt Tasting Lounge.  Each evenings performance was paired to a meal by chef Alain Chow.

This is a case where the whole experience must be reflected upon.  As much as I said that I leave the food reviews to the food bloggers, this show could not have existed without the meals.  The food plays an integral part and the show would have been weaker without it.   The performances were touching and humourous but on it’s own it may not have been as greatly appreciated.  It is the sum or culmination of all the parts that made this an event to be shared with others.

But I take you back to the evening just before Episode Two: Magic, where my friend and I chose to park a few blocks away for free parking.  En route to Salt Tasting Lounge, we passed the Columbia Street Pump Station and I remembered something.  Last year, I did a Neworld Theatre PodPlay where one of them ended right here with us looking down at a particular brick with a message.   The brick simply said “To connect“  If you look around, this same message is scattered around in different languages.

And that’s what I see as the thread of this production that ties it all together.

I feel that that’s what this whole four episode experience has been all about, to connect.  When we arrived, we were greeted and we introduced ourselves to other people.  Some had experienced it for the first time others were new like us.  We were open to the process of connection, as were they, which is not usually the case for most dinner experiences.

As we were ushered downstairs to begin our journey with Sean and Heather, we ended up with new tablemates on a long table format which again is about connecting people.  I love that people who chose to be here, embraced this experience and chose to find out a little bit more about our neighbours, about the people we live with, even if it is just for a moment or an evening and some for longer.

There were bloggers galore with their cameras taking pictures of the food and the event.  At times, it seemed like they were distancing themselves from us hiding behind the lens, but in essence they too are seeking to create a digital connection to those who could not be there.  Capturing the moment, some by their photos and others by their words.

Since Sean and Heather reunited online, they asked whether anyone of us had met online.  A couple sitting across from us announced that they had met on Blendr three days earlier.  And what is Blendr, but a social networking app to connect virtual strangers to people of similar interests nearby.

Heather had a Twitter account (@Hthr4ptharmony) which allowed us to connect with her between the individual plays and even during the show itself.  Her character was a food blogger and she tweeted pictures of the meal throughout the night and interacted with some of us in the room.  A few of us tweeted with her throughout the week, swapping ideas, advice and even on what to wear.

At the end of Episode 2, as we were leaving the restaurant, we were encouraged to send a message to the couple by writing words of wisdom to the newly engaged couple on the chalkboard in the stairwell.  With the online world, how often do we connect through actually handwriting anymore?  Yet here we were doing exactly that.

On the final night, there was a moment early on where we were asked to use our phones to call someone right now.   So we did.  We were then instructed to have them wait till every one had a loved one on the phone.  Then all in unison, we reached out and touched them by telling them all that we love them.  How about that for embracing, “to connect“?  And can we ever really say “I love you” enough to those we do?

And with the Orkestar Slivovica there at the wedding episode we were there to connect each other in touch, smile and laughter as we danced the night away to the sounds of the merry Balkan Orchestra.

Each stage of FourPlay was about the two of them connecting at various stages of their relationship.  And we were allowed to participate in it with them.  Just all of these intricate web of connections that were set up and that didn’t necessarily rely on the world of Facebook or the digital world.  Just a good old fashioned, face to face, “hey, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Anyways, I may be stretching things and maybe it is the observer effect (and I just Googled it and what do you know it’s related to the Hawthorne effect!) where I’m seeing what I want to.  But is that such a bad world to want to be a part of?

Thanks to all who were connected to a part of this wonderful experience.  Thanks for those who played along with us.  Thank you once again to Myriam and her team for another successful production.  May you have many more to come!

25 and Still Fighting – 100 Tickets and One Night Only! – May 4th, 2012

From the Fighting Chance Productions blog:

Grey Gardens will mark the 25th production in Fighting Chance’s 5 year history.  Our 25th production finds us incredibly proud of all of the amazing shows we have staged and of the talented performers we have worked with…it also finds us rather cash-strapped.  To celebrate our successes and prepare for the future, we are holding a fundraiser event: “25 and Still Fighting: Great Moments in FCP History“.

This one night only event promises to be amazing, with songs and scenes from each of our 25 shows by an impressive (and very long) list of performers.  There will also be a silent and live auction with some terrific items to be had, cash bar, appetizers, and a room filled with terrific people joining together to support the arts.  Join us to celebrate and to raise money for our 2012/2013 Season, which we hope will be our best yet.

“25 and Still Fighting” will be on Friday 4 May at 8pm at the Jericho Arts Centre.  Tickets are $25 and are available through a cast member or by emailing tickets@fightingchanceproductions.ca   Please note that there is a limit of 100 tickets for this event and they expect them to go quickly, so if you wish to attend, get your tickets early.

[With 35 people in the cast, that's like 3 audience members to every performer!]
